Calligraphy through the Ages... History At the root of all good calligraphy is a thorough understanding and appreciation of letterform that comes through the mind and the eye, both of which work together through the hand to produce coordinated and structured writing that, as skill develops, has life and spirit. The modern interest in calligraphy began about a hundred years ago in 1898 when Edward Johnston, the British calligrapher, began studying early manuscripts in the British Museum. Traditional beautiful writing is highly valued as a vehicle for communicating words and ideas in a classical way, and as a formal skill for producing documents. |
